A new land-based casino is going to be built in Malta
The Estonian casino operator Olympic Entertainment Group (OEG) is teaming up with the Maltese hotelier Eden Leisure Group (ELG) to start works on Malta's largest casino, which is going to become the gambling centre of Europe. The Malta Intercontinental Hotel has a budget of 7 million euros for the future property.
A casino operator present in 7 countries
The Estonian group OEG is currently the largest provider of gambling services in the Baltic countries. They are also present in the land-based casino industry in Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Belarus. The OEG operates at 97 location spread over 7 countries. Their next complex marks their entry in the Maltese market. The group plans to hire 180 people for the new location.
Statements of the chairman
Armin Karu, the Chairman of the Board of the OEG group, said recently that his company had been looking for opportunities to expand to popular holiday destinations. With the announcement of the Maltese complex, the company makes a big step forward to carry out this expansion. Additionally, the businessman enters this new market by partnering with an equally respected local company, the ELG. They received a casino license for a period of 10 years at the beginning of the year, after the bidding process that began in July 2013 was finished.
The most important casino in Malta
The new casino complex will be named Malta InterContinental Hotel, and it is scheduled to open during the second half of 2015. Covering nearly 2,700m², it will emerge as the largest casino on the island. Its world-class games room will have 250 slot machines, 30 table games, a poker room, a sports betting area and a bar.
The Dragonara Casino has been the only operating land-based casino in Malta for many years. However, when in recent years the country became a Mecca for online gambling, several other complexes were built. Foreign visitors are drawn to the island to play at the casino and participate more frequently in international poker tournaments. The OEG and ELG groups hope to capitalise on this growing trend.
