Italian financial authorities attacking online poker player
For the first time in Italy, tax authorities are claiming 1,2 million euros to an online poker player. The calculation is based on 6 million euros won since 2007 in non-licensed sites in Italy, operating from Great Britain.
Milan based player
According to the new legislation, betting on unauthorised websites in Italy is submitted to tax. Accused of tax evasion et illegal gaming activities, a player based near Milan is first to pay the application of the new law. Indeed, the financial police have seized 2 cars and a flat belonging to him. He will be able to get them back, but only when he pays the 1,2 million euros claimed back in tax.
Other lawsuits expected
Last January, the Italian government allowed its financial authorities to pursue players who continue to gamble on non-licensed websites. On top of it, winnings are still taxed 20%. Other users are now worried they will have to pay tax even on less significant amounts.
